An approachable Biology Course with Dr. Nancy Taylor
What are BioVital conditions, and how can we optimize them as a means to protect against sickness and uplift overall health? Dr. Nancy Taylor specializes in health education that takes an approachable scientific look at our biology, with expert advice on how to best support these natural processes.
Each month we will explore a different theme, focusing on aspects of biology that aim to empower the student with a deeper understanding of the inner-workings of the body.
FEBRUARY 25 | THE HEART : It’s commonly accepted that when considering overall health, the heart is at the top of the list. These classes aim to offer a unique perspective, with groundbreaking scientific findings for consideration, proposing modes to widen understanding of the heart’s role in health to new depths.
The human heart-beat is responsible for pumping blood to every part of the body: carrying oxygen, essential compounds, nutrients, and energy to cells. The heart works closely with our autonomic nervous system to regulate blood pressure, blood sugars, hormones, proper organ function, and is essential in the removal of waste products, carbon dioxide, and other toxins.
The heart acts as a biological conductor, integrating the functions of vital processes in order to keep us alive and thriving. Within the last 40 years, research has found that the role of the heart goes much deeper than previously thought. The heart actually sends more signals to the brain than the brain does to the heart, influencing a wide range of cognitive and emotional functions. “Cardiac-coherence” occurs when the heart, brain, and nervous systems function in harmony. Disharmony ensues when chronic or acute stress from external stimuli triggers incoherent heart-rate patterns, which can lead to psychological, emotional, physiological, or biological imbalance or disease.
Taking into account new ways of looking at overall health, this class will focus on the significance of heart-health in maintaining biological coherence. We will explore how biofeedback tools, such as heart-rate-variability (HRV) can be used as a measurement for optimal functioning of our nervous system. Each student will be given the opportunity to measure their own heart-rate-variability to view personal autonomic nervous system function, variance in heart-beat, and current levels of mental/physical stress. Students will also gain simple practices that can improve HRV, provide support for these vital systems, and encourage overall health and vitality.
March 24 | THE BREATH : Oxygen is a basic building block for all biological processes to function. Learn how to optimize oxygen absorption and distribution so as to create the conditions for increased clarity, energy, and health.
April 28 | THE BIOME (with guest lecturer Jen Ramirez) : the human body is a super-organism containing trillions of micro-organisms. Their health plays a vital role in our overall health. Learn how you can optimize gut flora conditions from our colon-hyrdotherapist, Jen Ramirez.
May 26 | THE MATRIX : The extracellular matrix creates a fluid network that exists between our cells, and plays a vital role in detoxification, intercellular communication, and regulation, but can easily become bogged down by toxins. Learn ways to support the ECM to optimize alkalinity.
